We Spent a Year Working for Free. On Purpose.

Why Erik and I built real systems for real clients without taking a dollar, and what that year actually bought.

By Anton Hocking · October 2026

For the last year, Erik and I worked with clients for free. Not a free trial. Not a discount with an asterisk. We built real systems for real businesses and did not take a dollar for it.

People hear that and assume there was a catch. There was. The catch was for us.

What we were buying with that year

We were buying the only two things a new company cannot fake: proof that we could deliver, and real relationships with the people we delivered for. I did not want to take money from anybody until I knew the service was worth paying for. That matters to me more than I can say neatly. No ripping people off. No promising things and not doing them.

So we learned in public, on live businesses, with real stakes. Some of it broke. Some of it surprised us. All of it made the system better, and the clients knew exactly where they stood the whole time, because we told them.

Relationships compound

Here is what a year of that actually builds. A bookkeeping network that trusts you with its members. A coatings company that lets your AI answer its phones. Friends who bring you their mothers, their restaurants, their life's work, because they watched how you treated the last person's project.

Behind the bar, I learned that the regulars are the business. Everything else is weather. It turns out that is true of consulting too. The free year was not charity and it was not a marketing trick. It was how you earn regulars.

We did the free year so that when we finally charge, it is worth it.

Now we are moving forward, helping people at rates regular owners can actually afford, with systems we know work because we watched them work. If you are early in building something, consider your own version of the free year. Charge in trust first. The money follows people who do.
